In today’s context, the word IoT or the internet of things is soon becoming cliche!! The classic definitions are as follows as per our reliable friends Wiki and Websters:
Wikipedia: The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these things to connect, collect and exchange data.
Marriam Websters:
the networking capability that allows information to be sent to and received from objects and devices (such as fixtures and kitchen appliances) using the Internet.
The Wiki definition seems closer to the general understanding of what IoT stands for and is understood in terms of what it offers. Soon we are going through things having a persona of their own, their own voice, their own emotions, and their own intelligence. Now the scary movie makers will need to innovate as the things now are going to be “Live” things and it would not be scary if your clock starts talking to you…….and a doll talking and walking is going to be a normal thing. Scary movies have become science fiction ones!!!
Along with the term IoT and towing to the same line, many such terms are spawning off……..like the term IoMT…..guess what – M stands for medical things!! Now, what is the internet of medical things? Actually, this is not a new thing, it is just the terminology used for all the enabled devices related to healthcare that would come to life. These devices are expected to come with a myriad of connectivity options varying from wifi to BLE etc. These are also referred to as healthcare IoT. This is one area touted to have a lot of influence in terms of IoT.
There is another similar term doing rounds viz IIOT which means “Industrial Internet of Things“. It is also referred to as “IIoT” or “Internet of Industrial Things”. The Industry is the next big tsunami that is waiting to happen in terms of the IoT. The various industries are promised lands for IoT benefits. Lot many similar terms like “Smart Industry” and “Industry 4.0” are being envisioned to give a model for industries to adopt this new technology and reap in benefits of modernization.
